This madrigal was written by Pierre Passereau (d. 1547). He wrote many such chansons: most of them were of a rustic character, and similar to so-called ‘patter’ songs in that they have lots of alliterative words and other vocal sounds that are fun to listen to when sung fast.
Il est bel et bon is a conversation between two women about the merits of their husbands.
He is handsome and fine, my husband is,
There were two gossiping women in the village,
Saying one to the other, do you have a good husband?
He doesn't scold me, or beat me either.
He does the chores,
He feeds the chickens
while I take my pleasure.
Really you have to laugh
to hear the cries of the chicks and hens:
Co, co, co, co, da, little flirt, what's this?
