A very popular request for church weddings (including Royal weddings) - Thomas Tallis' beautiful setting of "If ye love me".
Lyrics "If ye love me, keep my commandments, and I will pray the father, and he shall give you another comforter, that he may bide with you forever, e'en the spirit of truth."
It was written in the Tudor era, and the earliest sources of this anthem date from the reign of Edward VI.
Here it is, arranged for string quartet, and transposed to a more string friendly G major, rather than the original F major.
This arrangement would suit being played for a church wedding. Alternatively, it would be very appropriate for for a student string orchestra, tying in with the Tudor period in History as a cross-curricular project! It's a beautiful anthem and the notes are not difficult, so it'd be an excellent choise to work on beautiful sound. However, it'd still provide a challenge as the individual entries are not as easy as they look: being originally written without barlines, it gives the impression of time truly standing still when you listen to it.
