This gives us the first appearance of Mrs Peachum in the ballad opera The Beggar's Opera, words by John Gay, written in 1727. According to Mrs P, nothing gets a woman turned on quite so much as the sight of a man about to be hanged! You can hear the ominous drum-beat.
It's a 19-bar vignette, using two recorders, flute, two bassoons (you may substitute cellos), snare drum, solo violin, viola and double bass. I have also thrown in a vocal score, which is published separately on this site. Mrs Peachum's range here is from E to E.
