Composed by John Bartlet. Arranged by Scott S. Stewart. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, Classical, Renaissance, Traditional. Score. 8 pages. Scott S. Stewart #1243372. Published by Scott S. Stewart (A0.1677867).
John Bartlet was an English Renaissance composer (fl. 1606–1610). In his only publication, “A Booke of Ayres with a Triplicitie of Musicke”, published in 1606, he describes himself as a "Gentleman and Practitioner in this art." The song “I would thou wert not fair, or I were wise” first appeared in one of Nicholas Breton’s character books “The Strange Fortunes of Two Excellent Princes” (1600). Breton, a prolific English writer, was known for his lyrical poems, and unfortunately outlived his reputation. In Breton’s “The Strange Fortunes”, a tête-a-tête occurs: Lady Mirella takes to her lute and sings to the Page [the Prince Fantiro incognito] (who sits in her chamber unseen by means of a curtain of crimson damask between them; she sings): “I would thou wert not fair, or I were wise”. Thus the marriage of Breton’s lyrics and Bartlet’s music gives us a simple, flirtatious ‘ayre’. This new setting is scored for solo voice with piano accompaniment. Performance time: 4:05+-.
