By Herbie Hancock. By Herbie Hancock. Arranged by Johan Verhey. This edition: pdf. Disco, Funk, Jazz, Rock. 86 pages. DaimlerMusic #821963. Published by DaimlerMusic (A0.1225926).
“I Thought It Was You” (1978, from the album Sunlight) is one of Herbie Hancock’s best-known jazz-funk tracks from his late-’70s electric period. The song blends jazz-funk, disco, pop, and early electronic fusion. It is especially notable because Hancock performs the lead vocals himself using a vocoder, which was unusual and innovative at the time.
The track features classic late-’70s fusion sounds—Fender Rhodes, Oberheim synths, sequencers, and a smooth, danceable groove. Musically it is built on a simple harmonic foundation enriched with layered synth textures, syncopation, and melodic hooks.
The song became a hit in Europe and is seen as a precursor to later smooth jazz, R&B, and electronic funk styles. Hancock’s use of the vocoder influenced many artists in the decades that followed and reflects his ongoing interest in merging jazz with contemporary commercial sounds.
