Published by Michelle Mooney (A0.1566905).New Zealand film makers Sir Peter Jackson and Dame Fran Walsh's daughter Katie had attended Ed Sheeran's concert in Wellington a few months before Jackson approached Sheeran to produce music for the closing credits of the second of three "Hobbit" films "The Hobbit - The Desolation of Smaug". Jackson, knowing Katie's enthusiasm for Sheeran, had visited after the show and they had exchanged email addresses, and Jackson was able to contact Ed Sheeran when he was in Ibiza for a wedding. Two days later he arrived in Wellington.
Sheeran, already a fan of Tolkien and of the Jackson/Walsh's Lord of the Rings films, was pleased to accept the request, and produced a folk song from the perspective of a dwarf. The song itself was created mostly within a day from Park Road Post, a post-production facility in Wellington, New Zealand, and released in 2013 firstly on iTunes and, five days later, with the movie release of the second of the three Hobbit movies. He played all but the cello for the song, that part of which was created under direction by Sheeran by Flight of the Conchords' touring cellist Nigel Collins.
