As with all the critical editions, the appearance of the music is excellent, easy to read, extremely clear. The introduction essay is interesting with many musical explanations, especially the explanation that the Naples version of I Puritani, though called the Malibran edition by many, was not actually constructed solely with her in mind, in fact, except for transposing the second and third acts in various places, there is no real outward indication that Bellini though only of her. He took more care transferring Ricardo from Baritone to tenor. A wealth of music has been restored: A trio for act one (in Paris version, T, B, C; in Naples T, T, C) and the Malibran solo that ends the Naples version is complete in its original duet form that ended the Paris version (thus, unlike we think, it was not created with Malibran in mind, just altered so she could sing it as a solo piece). Bellini did no transpositions for Elvira in the first act, which would have put it out of Malibran's range.

An excellent document of the opera in both its Paris and Naples editions. The mystique of it being for Malibran is well explained, for Bellini didn't really have her specifically in mind other than to know she was supposedly to be the singer for the role of Elvira. The full transpositions of Riccardo from BASS to Tenor are included, and the entire last scene of Act 3 (act 2 Napes edition) is written in a way to very easily follow the intent of the composer. Very well designed instructions are written within the score so as to know how to fit the Naples version into the Paris version for a complete performance of either. A trio in act one is restored (in both versions; one for CTB, the other for TTC), and the ST duet that ended the opera originally (later in Naples version to be a cabaletta for contralto, Malibran singing Elvira) is also fully included. A truly masterful job of creating a useable performing version of the opera.
