Composed by Holland Smith. Arranged by KATHLEEN HOLYOAK. Children,Instructional. Octavo. 4 pages. Kathleen Holyoak #6235645. Published by Kathleen Holyoak (A0.888517).
"I matter because I'm me, you matter because you're you," are words written by 8 year old Holland Smith for a Reflections Music writing competition (grades 3 - 6) and won 1st place in Utah's regional contest. It will be entered in the state in Feb., 2021. Sometimes we learn the best lessons from smaller people. This children's song is perfect for a soloist or a choir. Follow her words as you listen:
I matter because I’m me.
You matter because you’re you.
I like books, you like bikes.
I like to swim, you like to hike.
Like a box of crayons
We come in different colors
But when we blend together
Everybody matters.
I matter because I’m me.
You matter because you’re you.
I like red, you like blue.
I like green and so do you.
Like a box of crayons,
We come in different colors
But when we blend together
Everybody matters!
But when we blend together
Everybody matters!

This sweet song has such a strong message and teaches us to reach out and be inclusive.

The simplicity of the melody makes it easy for children to learn. Even the accompaniment lends itself to adding other percussion instruments as well as the simple piano and bass line.
