This is for James Cawthorne Shay, my grandad on my mother's side. I've wanted to write a tribute to my grandad for a long time as he bought me my first piano. It was a very generous gift as I didn't show any signs of being a child prodigy and indeed I wasn't! He couldn't have known the impact music has had on my life so I've called it 'I'm still playing Grandpa' as if to say it's been a long term gift of music that I still appreciate and I play the piano for long hours every day. The piano is long gone now but it got me started and that's what matters to me. It's half a century since I last saw my grandad so I've been a bit slow. He died when I was quite young so I don't have very strong memories - I can picture his face but can't hear his voice but I remember that he was very kind and soft spoken and never lost his temper. According to my parents he never did. I take it through the 2 keys of D and Eb major. It has a number of 10ths in it which can be difficult to play for those with smaller hands. They can rolled or replaced by octaves or just single notes (root). I don't include dynamics, pedalling or fingering and prefer to leave these to the discretion of the individual pianist. No two piano teachers ever agree on these things anyway. I do include chord symbols which I find most useful for learning and remembering pieces. I hope you enjoy learning this piece as much as I enjoyed writing and arranging it.
