This is an early Verdi opera. Those unfamiliar with it will be shocked to hear music they know from his Il Trovatore in the last act just before Leonore dies. Yes, that same tune is here, but embellished. The opera is quite interesting with tons of very exciting music, but not nearly as dramatic as some other early Verdi operas. This edition is actually the best one I have ever seen, which is quite a very normal thing to say about Ricordi editions. The printing is very clear, but unlike critical editions, it doesn't really tell much about the history of the opera or any variations Verdi made while writing it. We all know that he would later rewrite the opera for Paris and name it Jerusaleme. However he made very noticeable changes in that score (and not always for the better). The original conception was very tightly fitted without any wasted time. A great buy.
