This is an arrangement of a gentle ballad with a very long title by singer-songwriter Jim Croce, and it was written following an argument with his wife Ingrid in 1973. Sadly, Jim Croce was killed in a plane crash in September '73, and this song was released posthumously in early 1974 and it peaked at No.9 in the charts, his fifth and final top ten hit. The lyrics aren't trying to be clever with some hidden depth or imagery, but they are simple and direct, giving the song a personal quality which is immediately understood by the listener. Therefore, the singing should be straight-forward too, clear and heart-felt, lifting up in the chorus and becoming more reflective in the verses. The piano accompaniment can be varied to imitate guitar-style strumming patterns, or replaced with a guitar following the chords in the score.
