♫ Longfellow, native of Maine, became America’s most famous poets. He is also known as an educator, a translator, and supported the abolition of slavery. His son, Charles, joined the Union army in 1863, without his father’s permission. In November of the same year Charles was seriously injured in the Battle of Mine Run. He authored “Christmas Bells” (the basis of this hymn) shortly afterward.
♫ The chord structure of the bells’ sections is designed to produce partials that simulate the sounds of church bells.
