"I Cry to Thee: Psalm 130" was composed after learning that a choir member from a previous church had committed suicide. I call her "Dee." "Dee" suffered from what is now called schizoaffective disorder bipolar type. Some days were better than others. When she was present, she was amazing. Though, those times were difficult to predict. It is estimated that 26.2 % of Americans ages 18 and older, about 1 in 4 adults, suffer from a diagnosable mental disorder. Composers have never been immune to mental issues. Beethoven, Schumann, Tchaikovsky, and Rachmaninov are perhaps the most famous composers who suffered from severe depression, but they are not alone. Included in that company were de Lassus, Gesualdo, Dowland, Belioz, Glinka, Bruckner, Wolf, and Ives. To capture the constant emotional changes the music fluctuates between major and minor tonality, changing meter and tone, sometimes in unexpected places.
