Composed by Kathleen Pluth. Text: Original hymn texts. Fresh hymn texts for the Church Year. Sundays, Solemnities, Feasts. Published by CanticaNOVA Publications (C5.4100).
Kathleen Pluth, offers us a valuable collection of new texts in her Hymns for the Liturgical Year. Working toward her Licentiate degree in Sacred Theology at the Dominican House of Studies in Washington DC, she has completed a cycle of new hymn texts for various seasons, solemnities and feasts, updating traditional images and using Scripture from the Lectionary for each of her new hymns. Some of these hymns have been featured in the monthly liturgical prayer book, Magnificat. The author offers a liturgical catechesis in her preface, The Holy Circle. Contents include hymns for: Advent / Christmastide / Holy Family / Epiphany / Baptism of the Lord / Lent / Holy Week / Eastertide / Ascension / Pentecost / Most Holy Trinity / Corpus Christi / Sacred Heart / Christ the King // Mary, Mother of God [January 1] / Presentation of the Lord [February 2] / Saint Joseph [March 19] / Annunciation of the Lord [March 25] / Nativity of Saint John the Baptist [June 24] / Saints Peter and Paul [June 29] / Transfiguration [August 6] / Assumption of the Blessed Virgin Mary [August 15] / Exaltation of the Holy Cross [September 14] / All Saints [November 1] / All Souls [November 2] / Dedication of the Lateran Basilica [November 9] / Immaculate Conception of the BVM [December 8]. These hymn texts are published in booklet form with one hymn per page, so each page (5! x 8! inches) can be reproduced on congregational liturgy sheets. The hymns texts are written in common meters (such as 7676D, 8686, 8888) and a familiar tune is suggested for each hymn text (like Aurelia, Kingsfold, or O waly waly). Alternate tunes for each text are also given. The booklet contains a printed permission notice so that the original purchaser is free to duplicate the texts for congregational or choral use. These new texts, flowing from the history and Scripture for each season or feast, offer a simple way, when sung to familiar tunes, to enliven congregational singing with fresh, appealing sung meditations on these days in our Church calendar.
