Deze kerstfantasie is gebaseerd op een aantal relatief onbekende kerstliederen. Naast een drietal Engelse Christmas Carols is in deze compositie ook een fragment uit het Gregoriaans, een Maria antifoon (Salve Regina), en een Russisch kerstlied (Carol of the Bells) opgenomen. Karakteristiek voor dit laatste lied is het herhalende motiefje dat symbool staat voor het klokkengebeier. De Carols zijn meer gedragen van karakter en vertegenwoordigen het lyrische moment in deze fantasie. Het stuk eindigt majestueus met het eerdergenoemde Salve Regina.

The Christmas fantasy Hymns and Carols is based on a number of relatively unknown carols. Alongside three English Christmas carols, this composition includes a fragment of a Gregorian chant, a Marian antiphon (Salve Regina), and a Russian Carol. A characteristic feature of this last song is the recurring motif that symbolises the bells chiming to welcome in the New Year. The English carols represent the more lyrical part of this fantasy. The piece has a majestic ending, which returns to the aforementioned Salve Regina, a hymn to the Virgin Mary.

Cette fantaisie de noël est basée sur quelques chants de noël relativement inconnus. Trois Christmas Carols anglais, un fragment Grégorien, Salve Regina, et un chant Russe (Carol of the Bells) en font partie. Ce dernier se caractérise par le motif répété symbolisant les carillons. Les Carols anglais sont plus graves et représentent les moments lyriques. La pièce finit majestueusement avec le Salve Regina.

Die Weihnachtsfantasie Hymns and Carols basiert auf einigen eher unbekannten Weihnachtsliedern: drei englische Carols, ein Fragment aus dem gregorianischen Antiphon Salve regina und ein russisches Weihnachtslied. Charakteristisch für dieses letzte Lied ist ein sich stets wiederholendes Motiv, das das Glockengeläut darstellen soll. Die englischen Lieder haben einen eher verhaltenen Charakter. In Stimmführung und Harmonisierung sind die Lieder etwas außergewöhnlich gestaltet. Das Stück endet majestätisch - unter Rückgriff auf den der heiligen Maria gewidmeten Hymnus Salve regina.
