Composed by Edmund Jolliffe. This edition: pdf. 21st Century, A Cappella, Classical, Contemporary A Cappella, Contest, Festival. 10 pages. Reify Music Ltd #1289081. Published by Reify Music Ltd (A0.1726908).
'Hymn to Diana' sets a poem by Ben Jonson (1573-1637). This is the final movement in Edmund's 'Sleep Cycle' - a 25 minute 7 movement piece - but may be performed as a stand-alone piece. It is vibrant and upbeat, full of exciting crisp harmonies that rise to a glorious climax at the end. The composer writes "I wanted to end the cycle on an upbeat note, rather than a quiet one. This poem is a simple poem to Diana (Goddess of the moon). The poem ends ‘Thou that mak’st a day of night – Goddess excellently bright’. And thus the sleep cycle begins again."
QUEEN and huntress, chaste and fair,
Now the sun is laid to sleep,
Seated in thy silver chair,
State in wonted manner keep:
Hesperus entreats thy light,
Goddess excellently bright.
Earth, let not thy envious shade
Dare itself to interpose;
Cynthia's shining orb was made
Heaven to clear when day did close:
Bless us then with wished sight,
Goddess excellently bright.
Lay thy bow of pearl apart,
And thy crystal-shining quiver;
Give unto the flying hart
Space to breathe, how short soever:
Thou that mak'st a day of night—
Goddess excellently bright.
Ben Jonson, 1573-1637.
