This piece, dating from the 1600s, is known as Canada's oldest Christmas hymn, written by a Jesuit missionary and adapted from the language of the First Nations Huron / Wendat people.
This song provides a fantastic way to practice chord progression and moving up and down the fretboad. In many cases, finger positions have been somewhat simplified by using barre chords to make movement between measures easier. Can be played at a solemn, sedate pace that is suitable for Early Intermediate players and above. Ornamentation can be added at the player's discretion.
HINT: I think of this piece as an exercise in learning chord positions. BUT, if you wish to simplify the tab with less shifting around the fretboard... the Bm chords written as 235 can all be barred at 555. If there is a pickup note before the chord at 2 on the melody string, that note can also be found at 5 on the middle string. No need to reposition your fingers. Just play x5x and then the 555 chord. Likewise, any A chord tabbed as 104 can also be barred at 444. Happy Strumming!
