This arrangement attempts to describe the austere, sparse and cold landscape of the Canadian north. The flute part is filled with florid, fantasia-like sections sometimes mixed with moments of reflection and pathos. This means that performances must be given with feeling and creative intuition. In contrast to the flute part the violin focuses mostly on the 16th century French carol melody.
A strong sense of ensemble playing via entrances, tuning, dynamics and musicality are needed as often the violinist has the traditional carol tune while the flute plays a fantasia part. This enables people of different playing levels to enjoy the music together.
