Composed by Franz (dp) Liszt; James Johnston Stewart. Arranged by Peet du Toit. This edition: pdf. Romantic Period. 2 pages. Peet du Toit #1454579. Published by Peet du Toit (A0.1896178).
Liszt's 19 Hungarian Rhapsodies , derived from the Magyar gypsy orchestras he knew from his early years, were highly regarded by the composer's compatriots. As the Hungarian Count Apponyi wrote in his memoirs, the works were 'a genuine product of the Hungarian spirit.'
The music of the rhapsodies varies from the slow and sensual to the vigirous and dramatic wih constant mood and tempo changes. The works also represent one of the first examples of a 'nationalist' style of writing. The rhapsodies were orginally written for piano solo, although six pieces were later orchestrated by Liszt and his contemporary, the Polish flautist and composer Franz Doppler. Some of the orchestrations include a reworking of the original musical material. The rhapsodies were written over a period of 40 years, 1846-85.
Liszt named the ninth rhapsody Pesther Carneval (Carnival in Pest). The piece opens with grand, striding music, which rises up the scale and is puctuated by dramatic chords. Sweet and sentimetal passage follows, leading into a slow melody. A vigorous theme begins and moves along rapidly. Various melodies follow, all with constant lilting accompaniment. The music gthers speed and energy and builds to a fiery finale and the final three big chords.
Here's a glimpse thereof for violin and cello for your enjoyment.
