Hummingbird is a piece for SATB choir and piano with text by Amy Woscheck Schmidt.
Setting Amy's poem Hummingbird was a delight - the piece practically composed itself because the text itself sings. I wanted to capture the inherent joyfulness of a hummingbird's busyness, which is why the piece is subtitled Rechant, a light, playful, French renaissance madrigal form. The use of rechant form and hummingbird chirps in the piano accompaniment also pays homage to the 20th century French composer Olivier Messiaen, the first composer to extensively employ notated birdsong.
The hummingbird's pizzazz is not the only characteristic in Amy's poem, however. The hummingbird's observer - the poet - is deeply melancholic and yearns to be free. To illustrate the chasm between the hummingbird and the poet, I have the choir attempt to "take flight" throughout the piece only to fall back to earth. In the end, the choir never quite takes off and the piece never fully resolves. This represents the poet's ultimately impossible wish to be as light and care-free as the hummingbird.
