Reflections on the composition

"Human Racing" is the title track of Nicholas David (Nik) Kershaw’s (b. 1958) hit debut studio album of the same name. It was released on September 3, 1984, and became a hit on the UK Singles Chart. I was impressed by its fluid and powerful melody, its distinctive harmony, and its lyrics, which encompass a rare and alert social critique. Nik Kershaw went on to release several singles that entered the Top 40 during his long and successful career.

A note from the arranger

The Toccata is primarily a paraphrase de concert in the Franz Liszt tradition of recreating other composers’ works. A brief introduction transforms the song’s opening into a succession of repeated-note motifs supported by cadential chords along the A–E axis, which serves as a pivot for the original A minor tonality. The paraphrase of the song itself elaborates on the original melody, accompanied by a dense series of chords and broken arpeggios.

The central section introduces a cadential pivot that modulates unexpectedly to F♯. This new tonal center gives rise to enharmonic procedures that transfigure the song’s fade-out into continuous variations on a D minor ninth chord, set against stretches of polytonal scales in the left hand, and concluding with a very soft dynamic.

The impetus for the creation of this piece came from Petra Chong, who asked me to arrange a song she loved. This dynamic, virtuosic work is the result of her request. I hope it stands as a tribute to the song and its composer.
