Chappell Roan has been refreshingly candid about what sparked "Hot To Go!": she was jealous of the Village People's "Y.M.C.A." She wanted her own crowd-participation anthem with its own spelling-out-the-letters arm choreography, and she wrote it in two weeks just before her 2023 Naked in North America Tour — deliberately designing the dance to travel virally across festival crowds and social media. It worked spectacularly. The song, rooted in Roan's childhood dream of becoming a cheerleader, became a generational phenomenon as enormous festival audiences spelled out H-O-T-T-O-G-O in unison. David Maddux's TTBB arrangement stays true to the song's hyper-80s dance-pop DNA, handing the built-in audience participation directly to the chorus — and virtually guaranteeing that no audience will be sitting down by the time the final spelling is complete.
