Ask Noel Rawsthorne to compose a piece for organ based on The Sailor's Hornpipe and the result is a foregone conclusion: bubbling, totally enjoyable music that simply fizzes along, sweeping all and sundry before it!

That is why we have described Hornpipe Humoresque as a 'nautical extravaganza'. Vintage Rawsthorne!

In High Good Humour
A superbly crafted piece by a top cathedral organist, written with the tongue firmly in the cheek. It starts with the well known Sailors' Hornpipe as just a single line of melody given out on a 2-ft piccolo stop, but humorously punctuated by the final two notes of the phrase on the pedal trombone - and after the first iteration those two notes are shifted up by a minor third.Thereafter it is a glorious excursion via Bach (Brandenburg Concerto no. 3), Vivaldi ('Spring' from 'The Four Seasons'), Arne (Rule Britannia), and Widor (that Toccata), but always working the Sailors' Hornpipe into each of these.Great fun, both for the player and the audience, and not unduly difficult.
