Composed by Peter Louis van Dijk. Arranged by Peter Louis van Dijk. King's Singers Choral. Octavo. 24 pages. Hal Leonard #8742856. Published by Hal Leonard (HL.8742856).UPC: 073999428568. 6.75x10.5x0.052 inches.
Written for the king'singers for their 1995 South African tour and included on their Street Songs album, this evocative work is based on a 16th-century Bushman painting of a European ship inhabited by people they saw as “gods” but who would soon be the cause of the Bushmen's extinction. Powerful!

I absolutely love the sound of The King's Singers, and this arrangement of 'Horizons' truly captures their evocative style. As an adult learner in a community choir, I find it quite challenging with the SATTBB divisi, so it's not exactly a 'weekend play.' However, the passion behind the piece, based on the Bushman painting, makes the effort worthwhile. It's rewarding to work on such a powerful and meaningful a cappella piece.

This score for 'Horizons' is a solid choice for any vocal coach working with an advanced a cappella choir. Although the performance is purely vocal, I appreciate the clear layout of all the divisi voice parts, which is crucial for identifying potential intonation challenges. The implicit piano reduction (for rehearsal) would need to accurately reflect the complex SATTBB texture, aiding singers in internalizing their lines. A powerful and evocative piece to guide a choir through.

As a professional chorister, 'Horizons' is a challenging but brilliant selection. The divisi a cappella structure requires a highly skilled ensemble, so it's not a quick sight-read for a last-minute gig. Page turns are manageable given the 24-page octavo format. While it lacks explicit chord symbols (expected for a contemporary a cappella piece), the intricate voice parts are clearly laid out. A powerful piece that delivers impact with thorough rehearsal.

This SATB divisi a cappella arrangement of 'Horizons' by Peter Louis van Dijk is a fantastic piece for advanced high school or collegiate choirs. The engraving from Hal Leonard is clear and well-spaced, making complex rhythms and dense harmonies easy to read. While challenging with its SATTBB demands, it's an excellent vehicle for teaching advanced voice leading, intonation, and expressive interpretation. A superb addition to any serious choral program's repertoire.
