Program Notes - Hope is a musical reflection on the resilience required to navigate "trying times." The work opens in an ethereal, contemplative state, representing the quiet uncertainty we often face during periods of struggle. However, as the title suggests, the narrative is one of perseverance—honoring the philosophy that "it ain’t over ‘til it’s over."

The music transitions from atmospheric, delicate textures into a spirited Allegro, marked by driving fanfares and a sense of renewed energy. After a moment of deep, lyrical reflection in the Largo section, the piece culminates in a powerful reprise that weaves together the work’s primary themes. Hope is a celebration of the breadth of the wind band’s expressive power and a reminder that even the most difficult journeys can end intriumph.

Conductor’s Notes - Hope offers several opportunities to showcase the specific strengths of your ensemble:

Atmosphere: The opening should feel "ad-lib" and fluid. The reed section provides a piano-like sustain that sets an ethereal stage. The Synth in the Marimba part should be a warm pad with a little edge. Think of a warm oboe with lots of reverb. The 8th note patterns in the middle should have more of a piano, sustained attack, but still a warm tone.

Flexibility (Solos): While solos are not explicitly marked, measures 6 and 46 are ideal candidates for soloists. Use your discretion based on your players' confidence; the Largo at m. 46 particularly benefits from a soloistic color.

Contrast & Dynamics: The transition at m. 46 features a "Long Hold" fermata. Encourage a decrescendo to niente while maintaining pitch center. The subsequent Allegro should be taken as briskly as your ensemble can cleanly execute to emphasize the "fanfarish" drive.

The Transition: The move into the final Allegro should feel free and organic rather than strictly metered. The finale combines both main themes, requiring a strong balance between the melodic lines through the final key change.
