Festive sounding, but not fun to play
I am a professional composer playing in a community band, and we are playing Holiday Overture. If you want a concert opener that's highly commercial-sounding and glittery, this is the piece for you. However, it was poorly written. There are some passages for the flute that are pretty obnoxious to play, as well as for the clarinets. Transitions between holiday themes are jarring with some odd runs for the upper woodwinds, there's not much contrast, and the themes change abruptly. It changes key many times and ends in G-flat major. There is a quirky 7/8 bar that is fun, but might be a problem depending on your band's level. I would actually round up the level from grade 4.5 to 5. Audiences will probably love this piece, but as a performer, this is my least favorite piece. Leroy Anderson's Christmas Festival is still better, though overplayed.
