Published by Dr. Tom's Charts / Telematic Studios (A0.1854162)."Hold the Line" is Toto's electrifying rock debut single, released in 1978 on their self-titled first album, announcing the band's arrival with a ferocious combination of hard-driving piano, muscular guitars, and a powerhouse vocal that immediately established them as one of the tightest and most technically accomplished rock acts of the era. "Hold the Line" is a fantastic choice for intermediate to advanced bands ready to take on a song that demands chops, stamina, and an absolutely locked-in ensemble feel from every player on stage. The piano riff is the beating heart of the song — bold, percussive, and relentless — challenging keyboardists to bring both power and precision to a figure that must hit like a hammer every single time without losing its rhythmic drive. The guitar work layers in with crunchy, authoritative rhythm playing and soaring lead lines that showcase the importance of tone and confidence, rewarding players who can deliver both grit and finesse in equal measure. The rhythm section is a masterclass in rock tightness, with the drums and bass interlocking with machine-like precision while still swinging with genuine human energy, demanding that players bring their absolute best pocket and refuse to budge from the groove. For singers, "Hold the Line" is a serious vocal challenge, requiring a wide dynamic range, raw power in the upper register, and the ability to deliver an emotionally charged performance with conviction and control. The song's explosive energy, memorable hooks, and sheer musical firepower make it a guaranteed showstopper that puts a band's collective skill and chemistry proudly on display.
A NOTE ABOUT DR. TOMS CHARTS
DR. TOMS CHARTS help musicians make more music together. Inspired by the Nashville Number System and the classic Rise Up Singing, these charts emphasize song form with lyrics overlaid on top of evenly spaced chords. These musical roadmaps let you focus on what you love: vocal delivery, groove, harmonies, feel, and more! You can even experiment with different styles and meters.
In the HYBRID chart, the first chord of each line aligns with the first word or syllable on the downbeat, highlighting pickups and delayed entries. Subsequent chords may not align exactly with every word, but once the singer nails the entry, everything locks in! This format might look unfamiliar at first, but evenly spaced chords improve groove and accuracy. The harmonic rhythm guides the melody! For singers, the LYRICS ONLY chart provides all the words with rehearsal cues (intros, verses, bridges, solos).
Keep on jammin!
