I always like having a bit of an oddball track on each of my albums, one that you really wouldn’t expect on a Piano Collections album. In this case, I think “Hip Shop” most fits the bill - it’s short, it’s groovy, and while it doesn’t seem to provide enough material to make an extensive arrangement out of, that’s a lot of the fun. As mentioned in the “A CYBER’S WORLD?” notes, I’m a fan of newgrass and modern folk, so the approach I took with “Hip Shop” leans a bit in that direction, with an ongoing accompanimental pattern that’s evocative of the guitar technique “Travis picking”, a pattern that I love using on piano.
In keeping within the simple, repetitive nature of the original, I just “loop” it, more or less, with several iterations that play with the material in fairly reserved ways, deliberately avoiding becoming too ambitious with the development and reharmonization. The result, I think, is a nice reprieve before the storm that is “Attack of the Killer Queen”.
