Hey Jude has long been one of my favourite Beatles melodies, I remember the first time I heard the song. It was love at first hearing! In the years since I have worked on various attempts at arranging the tune for the guitar. After having made an arrangement for solo guitar I realised that the version I had created was relying far too heavily on the Beatles’ original rendition based on Paul McCartney’s piano playing and did not sound particularly good on the guitar, so I started playing around with different ways of arranging the tune more suitable for the guitar and came up with a Tango version that fit the guitar perfectly, enhancing the lyrical qualities of the original. The Tango arrangement utilises many techniques that suit the guitar; vibrato, legatos, glissandos, harmonics, and rasqueados. The rasqueados attempt to imitate Paul McCartney’s wailing in what I call the “Hare Khrishna” sections of the original. The piece is for advanced guitarists who have mastered these techniques for guitar, especially the four finger rasqueados in the seventh and tenth positions on the fretboard. Anyone new to this technique is welcome to visit my YouTube instruction video at https://youtu.be/E-0qZChM4j0 (from -4:05 to -3:01/8:00) where I demonstrate the technique in connection with a presentation of the flamenco Tanguillo. As the notation is accompanied by tablature I refrain from giving fingerings for the left hand, any guitarist that can follow the tablature can for sure find appropriate fingerings. I give fingering for the right hand only in connection with the four finger rasqueados.
