The presto section of this lively baroque trio sonata will definitely bring to mind the other more famous Johann. In fact, Heinichen was not only a contemporary of Bach's, but they shared some of the same patrons.
This piece, like many Bach pieces that have been played by sax quartets, also highlights what a great match a sax quartet is to baroque chamber music. The interplay between the various saxophones accentuates the shifting voices in the more up tempo movements from the trio sonatas of this period, and the smooth meld of the saxophone timbres creates a warm blend of sound for the slower moving more somber movements that surpasses the blend afforded by the original oboe, violin, and harpsichord.
