We have all heard of exemplary people who seem almost superhuman in not only their passion for a certain purpose, but also their perseverance in accomplishing their goal; a cause they feel so strongly about that they will let no obstacle stand in their way.Our history is filled with many inspiring examples: Martin Luther King Jr., who dared to speak up about racial equality and ultimately paid with his life; Nelson Mandela, who suffered torture for years while in captivity and yet somehow remained a kind and gracious man who forgave his captors and went on to spread the message of peace and tolerance in the world. Susan B. Anthony and Elizabeth Cady Stanton campaigned for the woman's right to vote and courageous women lost their lives in the Suffragist Movement. It is because of these brave women who would not relent that women can now vote. This piece is a tribute to those fiery hearts who have left a legacy of a better life for us today.Heart of Fire is to be performed with a driving energy in the outer sections, feeling direction toward downbeats. The contrasting middle section should be played in the opposite fashion, seemingly floating in an other-worldly serenity. This band version is the composer’s arrangement of the original work for string orchestra. .
