Composed by Trixie Hennig. Contemporary,Folk,Instructional,Sacred. Score. 72 pages. Trixie Hennig #2004361. Published by Trixie Hennig (A0.898559).
72 pages. Visit www.hearitability.com to view sample pages. Play by ear/ear training. A bold approach to the study of piano - Learning a musical instrument is primarily about sound - producing sound, reproducing sound and experiencing the power of organized sound! Music may look interesting on the page, but does not come to fruition until translated to sound. As we learn to read and spell language, we are often told to "sound it out". And yet in piano education, this phrase is rarely used. And how applicable it is - true mastery comes with the integration of sight and sound. One need not be neglected at the development of the other. Unfortunately, most piano methods prioritize the visual experience and learning to read over the aural exploration of sound and development of the ear. In hEarItAbility, students at any level can pursue the art of playing by ear and developing better aural skills. The book is designed to have appeal to any age group and provides focused parameters for reproducing melodies at the keyboard. The book primarily uses folk literature with the inclusion of Christmas songs, popular music and easy classics. Students using hEarItAbility have gained a wonderful awareness of patterns, familiarity with a variety of keys (transposition), facility playing with white and black notes, increased coordination, improved pitch matching and heightened musicianship. Their musical instincts have improved as well as their ability for memorization and melodic playbacks. And most importantly, it’s fun and rewarding! In Volume One, students progress from three-pitch pieces to the 8 pitches of "Happy Birthday". Students are exposed to the concepts of major and minor, bass notes, rhythm (quarter, eighth and rests), pentascales, patterns/form and playing in all keys. Accompanying worksheets provide the framework for letter recognition, written rhythm and pitch notation. 1/2" round color coding labels can be used as notehead stickers.

Promotes creativity
I stumbled upon this book & decided to take a look. I really like that it gives a student a note to start on, & a familiar tune, & asks them to figure out how to play the song. Then it continues by suggesting playing with both hands, starting on different notes, (playing in several keys), etc. The book continues to use familiar songs, & eventually gets to rhythms & notes on the staff. I think it can be used alone for younger children, but I would use it as a supplement for older kids.
