Composed by Dottie Rambo. Arranged by Paul A. Jorg. A Cappella. Octavo. 4 pages. Paul A. Jorg #6011495. Published by Paul A. Jorg (A0.522352).
This arrangement is a combination of an old public domain song entitled "O Store Gud" (O Great God), and Dottie Rambo's song "He Looked Beyond My Fault (and Saw My Need)" which is arranged for 4 part male harmony (TTBB) in a cappella style. The following is a bit of the history behind the Medley: Carl Boberg, a popular evangelical minister and teacher in Sweden, wrote his poem "O Store Gud (O Great God)" in the summer of 1885 . The poem originally contained nine verses; this arrangement uses two of them.
The first literal English translation by E. Gustav Johnson was published in the United States in 1925. The hymn had also become known in Germany and Russia, where the British missionary, Stuart K. Hine, serving in the Ukraine, was inspired to create his English paraphrase in the late '60's known as "How Great Thou Art." Several years later, he was surprised to hear it sung with an old Swedish melody, with which it has been associated ever since.
The tune used here is "Londonderry Air", an air that originated in the 1850's from County Londonderry in Ireland (now Northern Ireland). It is popular among the Irish diaspora and is very well known throughout the world. The song "Danny Boy" uses the tune, as well as Dottie Rambo's song "He Looked Beyond My Fault and Saw My Need".
