Harmony Lessons, Book 1 Note Speller 3 by John W. Schaum Piano Method - Sheet Music

By John W. Schaum

A practical volume to follow the SCHAUM NOTE SPELLER, Book Two. This is a book that can be used by instrumental and vocal teachers who want their students to know some of the essentials of harmony, but who haven't the time to teach it as a separate subject. Thus, a piano teacher, for example, can teach harmony in conjunction with the regular piano lesson. At the end of Book II, we have employed harmony in an accompaniment sense rather than in the traditional four-part harmony way. Transposition has been treated both melodically and harmonically.

College Theory

I had this book as a text in high school. The book assumes you have completed Theory Lessons 1-3 and Note Speller 1-2. If so, you are ready for this course in harmony. I don't recommend skipping around, because the lessons build on each other. The lessons don't teach four part harmony, but rather, they teach accompaniment type harmony. That makes them perfect for learning the theory needed to use lead sheets properly. I'm glad I went through both books!
