Composed by Felix Bartholdy Mendelssohn. Arranged by F. Leslie Smith. Christmas. Score and parts. 17 pages. Sweetwater Brass Press #484363. Published by Sweetwater Brass Press (A0.808629).
The melody that we now sing with this carol was composed 100 years after Charles Wesley first wrote the words. It was an English musician, William H. Cummings, who in 1855 adapted Mendelssohn’s Festgesang to fit the lyrics.
In this arrangement Trumpet 1 begins solo, soon joined by Trumpet 2, then Horn in F, then Trombone and finally Tuba; by the end of the first time through, all instruments are playing. The second time through is a graceful variation, the melody passing from instrument to instrument, which ends with an exultant restatement of the theme.
This arrangement was completed in 2012, and performance time runs about 1 minute, 51 seconds. The arranger, Les Smith, will be happy to provide substitute parts (for example, treble clef baritone for trombone) at no charge; contact him directly at [email protected]. For more arrangements by Les, enter "Sweetwater Brass Press" (without the quotation marks) in the search box. (Also, purchase of this piece entitles you to your choice of another of his arrangements at no charge; send a copy of your purchase receipt directly to him at [email protected].)
