Originally, it was called Good Morning to All and was a simple classroom song composed by two American sisters, Patty and Mildred Hill, to greet their students. It was only later that someone had the brilliant idea to turn it into the official anthem of birthdays (and overly sweet cakes ).
A juicy anecdote: For decades, the song was under copyright, meaning that singing Happy Birthday in public (in a restaurant, a movie...) could technically require paying royalties! Fortunately, in 2016, a U.S. court put an end to this nonsense, finally freeing the world’ s most popular aging anthem. Phew!
Unexpected fun fact: Marilyn Monroe delivered one of the most famous renditions with her sultry Happy Birthday, Mr. President in 1962, sung for John F.
