Halloween is one of the most profitable independent films of all time; directed and co-written by John Carpenter. Since its release in 1978 it has spawned a series of 12 prequels and sequels, with the latest in 2021 and a further one expected in 2022.It was filmed on a low budget so John Carpenter wrote the main theme music himself and also performed it on synthesisers, which was quite ground-breaking for the time. Its use of repetition is deceptively simple, because there is more to its construction than meets the eye. Unexpected phrase lengths and a relentless but gradual building of the sound and dynamic are contrasted with sparser and quieter sections. This clarinet quartet arrangement captures its tension and sense of impending doom.
