One of the most popular and most often staged operas, Carmen by Georges Bizet (1838-1875), this time arranged for a brass band. The setting of the opera is Spain. The composer wanted his music to resemble folk music, referring to gypsy culture, along with castanets and flamenco rhythms. Carmen's first aria illustrates her provocative nature as she leaves the cigarette factory and teases men who pay attention to her. Flirting with them, she sings "L'amour est un oiseau rebelle", popularly known as "Habanera".
