Gymnopédies by Erik Satie Easy Piano - Sheet Music

By Erik Satie

Headstrong and eccentric, Satie consciously distanced himself from the Romantic traditions of the nineteenth century. His three miniatures for piano “Gymnopédies” are the first testimony to his idea of a “New Simplicity”: repetitive, steady rhythms that are reminiscent of ancient cult dances have their very own meditative charm. Satie's principle of stringing together musical units rather than forcing them to develop later proved groundbreaking for many musical movements of the twentieth century. Satie would certainly have appreciated the balanced print image of our Urtext edition, as he took pleasure in the visual design of his musical scores

Perfect edition of 3 beautiful, simple pieces

Pieces like these remind a high-level pianist that music isn't about the technique or speed. It's amazing to stir up more emotion /sightreading/ pieces like these than when playing a difficult Rachmaninoff etude-tableau that required countless hours of practice. Despite the easy notes, these are not children or beginner's pieces. When played poorly, they have little more effect than Twinkle-Twinkle, but by the musically and emotionally mature, they can be very powerful. Now, to the Henle edition. The Henle, as always, comes with a beautiful preface, notes, and more. It is printed on eye-candy cream paper with dark black notes and text. Each gymnopedie fits on 2 pages (no page turn required) unlike the Schirmer edition I had used before, with 2 page turns per piece, and yet, the pages do not feel at all cramped. As always, Henle makes it a joy to play. These pieces are beautiful and well-worth buying. The Henle is very much worth the extra couple dollars.
