Published by Second Wind Music (A0.1868127)."Guitar Etude No. 3" is a smooth jazz, bossa nova style piece with jazzy chords and syncopated rhythms. Dan Fogelberg wrote this piece for a mostly instrumental, jazz-influenced collaborative album with Tim Weisberg (Twin Sons Of Different Mothers) that provided Fogelberg with an opportunity to highlight his instrumental skills. The album version features Fogelberg on guitars with Weisberg playing the lyrical melody on flute. In this arrangement, the tuba sets the tempo and feel of the piece with the rhythmic base line. The melody weaves between the other four instruments, with the French horn and trombone also covering some of the “guitar licks”. The range and rhythms in this piece are fairly easy, but the piece requires all players to be able to carry the lead at times and the ensemble needs to be “tight” – in sync on the rhythms and tempo, comfortable in playing jazz-style chords. A fun piece to play that could be good for an interlude in a variety of performance settings.
