Published by Portus Press (A0.1850925).Guaglione by Giuseppe Fanciulli (1915-1973) was originally written as a Neapolitan song with words by Nicola "Nisa" Salerno. It was the winning song at the 1956 IV Festival di Napoli. The word ‘guaglione’ is slang for ‘street urchin’.
Over the years a number of artists have covered the song but the best-known version is by the Cuban bandleader Perez Prado who recorded it in 1958 as an up-tempo mambo tune. His mambo version rose to further fame in the mid-1990s when it was used in a TV advert for a Guinness called ‘Anticipation’. It was subsequently released as a single and reached number 1 in the singles charts in Ireland, and number 2 in the UK.
Guaglione is arranged here for wind quintet by the bassoonist Lisa Portus.
