Zeit seines Lebens hatte der vielseitig interessierte Komponist zentrale Werke fremdsprachiger und deutscher Lyrik vertont. Zu Schillers berühmtem Klagegesang "Gruppe aus dem Tartarus" hatte er bereits 1989 ein Werk für gemischten Chor a cappella veröffentlicht (in "5 Gesänge" C 46 634). Wenige Jahre vor seinem Tod nahm er sich desselben Gedichts noch einmal an; jedoch ist das früher vorherrschende Gefühl der Verzweiflung der in die Unterwelt Verbannten abgemildert zur Ergebung in das unabänderliche Schicksal. Ein tiefsinniges, klangvolles, meisterhaftes Alterswerk!
