This painting reflects this artist's shift from seeing things literally to a more abstract view. She could look at a landscape and find on a canvas the essence of that place. The feeling of color, form and light. This music could have been the basis for a symphonic work, maybe even a flute concerto. Instead by using the flute (representing the artist) and the string quartet (representing the canvas/landscape) a closer, more intimate palette takes shape.
