Composed by Teresa Carreno. Arranged by Marc Donatelle. This edition: pdf, streaming. 19th Century, Chamber, Classical, Romantic Period. 30 pages. Marc Donatelle #1202981. Published by Marc Donatelle (A0.1635057).Teresa Carreño (1853-1917) was a Venezuelan pianist, singer, composer, and conductor. Over the course of her 54-year concert career, she became known as an internationally renowned virtuoso pianist and was often referred to as the "Valkyrie of the Piano”. Carreño composed approximately 75 works for solo piano, voice and piano, choir and orchestra, and instrumental ensemble.
Gottschalk Waltz in A-flat major was written by Carreño in about 1863 and was dedicated to fellow composer Louis Moreau Gottschalk. After meeting and studying with Gottschalk, he promoted her playing. Carreño would play all over the East coast of the USA and even perform at the White House. In 1866 her family left for Paris, where she began voice lessons with Rossini, and became acquainted with several composers, including Gounod and Liszt.
This piece, originally for piano, was composed in Ab Major. This transcription for string quartet is lowered to G major.
The introduction features a dramatic dotted rhythm, followed by an extended cadenza. The cadenza is shared among the members of the quartet and displays virtuosic technique. There is an optional cut to exclude the cadenza if needed.
Eight waltzes follow, in standard form that again feature each member. A Dal Segno follows that leads to an extended Coda, ending in a flourish. Playing time is around eight minutes, if performing all repeats and the D.S.
