I wanted to explore the energy and playfulness that percussion ensembles can create, so I incorporated a variety of instruments, including marimba, xylophone, bongos, triangle, and other percussion. The result is a lively and rhythmically engaging piece that shifts between different textures and grooves.
The piece follows a binary form, with the first section gradually building in intensity before transitioning into the second section, which shifts into 5/8. This change in meter was particularly fun to write, as it introduces a unique rhythmic drive centered around an ostinato that gives the section a distinctive pulse. Goombah Groove is all about movement and momentum, embracing the natural energy that percussion brings to music.
