Good Christian Men, Rejoice” (In dulci jubilo) is a traditional Christmas carol of humble beginnings in the 14th century. This little tune emerged, somewhat secretively I’d say, as a Latin tune with some German vernacular text thrown in by a guy who claimed ‘a vision’ of angels singing and dancing in celebration of the Nativity. A couple of hundred years later an English composer set this tune as an anthem entitled: “A Very Ancient German Christmas Carol” with the opening text “In dulci jubilo, let us our homage show”. Fast forward another hundred-years-plus and all Latin words were completely deleted; and a couple years later still, we arrive to the most popular translation of “In dulci jubilo” now “Good Christian men, rejoice”. This 21st century arrangement is scored for 4-part SATB ensemble to be performed a cappella. Performance time: 3:30. It has the original Latin-German text and the current most widely accepted English text of Anglican priest John Mason Neale.
