String Quartet String Quartet - Level 3 - Digital Download
SKU: A0.977361
Composed by John Barry. Arranged by Des McNutty. Contemporary. Score and parts. 14 pages. Des Press #6857803. Published by Des Press (A0.977361).
"Do you expect me to talk?"
"No, Mr. Bond, I expect you to die!"
It's hard to get more iconic than Sean Connery as James Bond in the 1964 blockbuster, Goldfinger, with Gert Fröbe in the title role.
John Barry composed the metal-heavy score and the title song. It was his personal favorite.
Barry named Shirley Bassey as the ideal interpretrix for Leslie Bricusse and Anthony Newley's lyrics with her can belto delivery. "Nobody could have sung it like her; she had that great dramatic sense." he said.
But the name-dropping doesn't end there: The session producer at Abbey Road Studios was George Martin (who produced for The Beatles). Strumming away on guitars are John Paul Jones and Jimmy Page, who later became half of rock legends Led Zeppelin. That's a whole lotta awesome!
This arrangement for string quartet is a relatively straight-forward idiomatic transcription but transposed to the tonality of the sheet music published in 1964. The recording with Shirley Bassey is a semitone lower.
The level is "intermediate" in a technical sense but please pay attention to style. Try to leave your audience emotionally stirred, not shaken.
Enjoy!
