God So Loved the World - Nygard
Beautiful, reverent, moving. As others have commented, the 2-against-3 rhythm takes some practice and you may want to transpose it down, but otherwise it's pretty accessible. I'm a mediocre organist working with a skilled soprano, and it was a thrill to do this piece at the Easter Vigil. My taste is very traditional, but some in the congregation commented on how different the piece is. I'd say if you like the Stainer version you'd like this, but give it a try even if your taste is more contemporary.

Moving setting
The Nygard setting of God So Loved the World is not as well known as the Stainer setting, but it should be. The music is very moving, a perfect setting of this sacred sentiment.Note: This piece is actually harder to perform than it looks. The choir is singing in 4/4 against the 6/8 of the accompaniment, and it is *very* for the singers to get sucked into the triplet rhythm. Watch out for that.Finally, the Mormon Tabernacle Choir has a recording of the Nygard setting with an orchestral accompaniment. It is exquisite, and I would love to have access to a string quartet reduction based on that. I would gladly use that instead of the piano accompaniment. Anyone?

God So Loved The World
God So Loved The World by John Stainer has been the only other arrangement that sent a tingle up the spine. Nothing has ever come close until I heard this arrangement or God So Loved The World by Carl J. Nygard Jr. performed on the CD Proms Praise at the Royal Albert Hall in London. Truely a beautiful piece of music. Capturing the full meaning of this Bible passage in music.
