Composed by Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625). Arranged by Clive Lane. This edition: pdf. Renaissance. 42 pages. Clive Lane #1443112. Published by Clive Lane (A0.1884379).
Go From My Window – Orlando Gibbons (1583-1625)
Arranged for clarinet choir/sextet (five clarinets and bass clarinet).
Gibbons uses a popular song of the time, repeating it ten times with the theme moving between parts. The ninth repetition (at letter H) is quite difficult for clarinet 5 and the bass clarinet, and can be omitted.
"Go from my window" is an Elizabethan-era ballad alluded to by Ophelia in Shakespeare's Hamlet (Act 4, Scene 5). The song, often depicting a woman telling her lover to leave due to a husband’s return or a storm, is used by a grieving, maddened Ophelia to highlight themes of lost love, abandonment, and danger.
Context in Hamlet:
Source: It is a traditional song popular in the early 17th century, also appearing in Francis Beaumont's The Knight of the Burning Pestle. Scene: During her madness, Ophelia mixes snatches of old songs, including the refrain "Go from my window, love, go". (Wikipedia)
Duration: 6’:55” Score and parts.
