By Laura Brannigan. Composed by Umberto Tozzi. Arranged by David Maddux. This edition: pdf. Holiday. 13 pages. David Maddux #1403892. Published by David Maddux (A0.1844338).
Umberto Tozzi wrote "Gloria" in 1979 as a love song; Laura Branigan recorded it in 1982 with entirely new English lyrics that reframed it as a sharp-eyed intervention — a narrator telling Gloria to slow down, that she's heading for a breakdown. Branigan's version spent 36 weeks on the Billboard Hot 100, then a record for a female artist, sold more than two million copies in the US alone, and held the top spot in Australia for seven consecutive weeks. In 2019, the St. Louis Blues adopted it as their unofficial victory song on their improbable run to the Stanley Cup. This TTBB setting opens with Handel's "and suddenly there was with the angel" before jumping to the Vivaldi Gloria's title chorus — then collides headlong into Branigan's 1982 dance hit. Laura Branigan surely never imagined it, but the mashup is irresistible.
